How to Host a Christmas Escape Room Party at Home
Note: links to Party Puzzle Kits products are our own products.
A Christmas escape room at home does not need a rented venue or expensive props. Print a few pages, fill three envelopes, set a timer, and kids get a 45-60 minute puzzle adventure before cocoa.
Ages and group size
- Best for ages 8-12. Younger kids can join if they pair with an older sibling or cousin.
- Ideal group: 3-8 players. One grown-up stays nearby as the "hint helper," not as a player.
What to print (30 minutes the day before)
- One player set of the escape-room pages (story, puzzles, certificate).
- One host copy with the answer key and hint cards.
- Three envelope labels (for example SNOWFLAKE, STOCKING, SLEIGH) or plain folded paper.
- Optional: matching invitations and place cards if you are inviting friends.
Setup the morning of the party
- Put Puzzle set 1 in the first envelope, set 2 in the second, and the final code-check pages in the third.
- Hide or place envelopes around one room so kids walk a little between puzzles.
- Clear a table for writing. Put out pencils and a phone timer.
- Keep a small mirror or bright window ready if any puzzle uses mirror writing.
- Optional: put small treats or candy canes where the final "Toy Sleigh" reveal will be.
Timing that keeps kids engaged
- Read-aloud story: 3-5 minutes.
- Puzzles: about 45 minutes. Offer a hint after 2-3 minutes of stuck silence, not instantly.
- Final code + certificate: 5 minutes.
- Total: about 60 minutes. Then cocoa or dessert.
Hint rules that work
- Let kids try first. Count to 120 in your head before offering help.
- Give the smallest hint that unblocks them (which puzzle to re-check, not the answer).
- If one kid is left out, assign a role: timer, recorder, or envelope runner.
Ages and difficulty tips
- Ages 8-9: allow open collaboration and more hints.
- Ages 10-12: teams can race a soft timer; keep it friendly, not stressful.
- Mixed ages: pair younger with older so nobody sits out.
What you need (cheap checklist)
- Printer and US Letter paper (color looks best; black and white works)
- Scissors for labels
- 3 envelopes or folded paper
- Pencils and a phone timer
- Optional: small mirror, treats for the final reveal
