Free Classroom Escape Room Printables (and When to Upgrade)
Note: links to Party Puzzle Kits products are our own products.
Teachers often want a low-risk first try before buying a full kit. These free one- and two-page printables are built for that: no email wall, US Letter, black-and-white friendly, and free for classroom use.
## Start with a freebie
- Free Pirate Cipher — a one-message Caesar cipher (shift +3) with a full answer key. Takes about 10 minutes. Good warm-up before a pirate-themed period.
- Free Classroom Team Roles + Record Sheet — five cut-out role cards (Reader, Recorder, Materials, Checker, Encourager) plus a blank team record sheet and a tiny practice code. Print one sheet per team of 3-5.
- Already live: the free Cookie Jar Code sample, Thanksgiving word search, and Christmas word search.
## How to use the roles sheet in one period
- Give roles before the story so every student has a job.
- Keep teams at 3-5. Bigger groups leave someone out.
- The Recorder owns the record sheet; the Checker is the only one who raises a hand for a code check.
- If you only have 20 minutes, run the mini practice on page 2 of the roles PDF, then save a full kit for Fun Friday.
## When a freebie is enough — and when it is not
A free cipher or word search is enough for a warm-up, early finishers, or a sub plan. It is not a full escape room: there is no linked puzzle chain, no host script, and no tiered hints.
For a full 45-60 minute period with a class of 20-30, use a classroom edition:
- Captain Saltbeard: Classroom Edition ($4.99) — pirate theme, 7 puzzles, teacher guide, team record sheet, hints, answer key.
- The Silver Owl Agency: Classroom Edition ($4.99) — spy theme, 8 puzzles, agent ID cards, teacher guide, hints, answer key.
Both are instant PDF downloads on Gumroad and Payhip. Black-and-white printing works.
## Honest skill note
These activities practice careful reading, simple decoding, teamwork, and following multi-step directions. They are not formally aligned to any state or Common Core standard — map them yourself if your school requires that.
## Next step
Download a freebie, try it with one class, then pick the classroom kit that matches your theme. More hosting tips: Classroom Escape Rooms: A Teacher's 45-Minute Plan.
